Psychology Major Discovers Passion for Supporting Students

At the heart of the psychology profession is a desire to help others. Being able to make a positive impact on the lives of many different area residents is what drew Easton native Lacey Moyer ’18 to intern at the Center for Humanistic Change.

When Moyer set out on her internship search she wasn’t sure how she wanted to employ her psychology major to support her community. Browsing through Moravian’s psychology internship guide, the Center stood out to Moyer because of its goal to provide youth, counselors, teachers, parents, and anyone else the tools needed for meaningful personal growth with an aim to develop all aspects of their life.

Concentrated on health-focused life skills training and alcohol, tobacco, and drug prevention education, the Allentown-based non-profit gave Moyer a tangible way to promote healthy living through a position on its prevention team.

“I worked with the prevention team, which designs and facilitates the programs that the Center offers. I had the opportunity to work on programs, oversee presentations, and even facilitate my own program,” Moyer says.

Since the Center works with a variety of organizations throughout the Lehigh Valley, Moyer was given the chance to facilitate a program for children and ultimately discover that she would like to work within a school.

“Being able to go into schools and connect with students made me realize that I want to be in a school setting,” Moyer says. “My internship has allowed me to grow as a person and has allowed me to help others, which is something that means the most to me.”

Putting her psychology studies into real-life practice proved to have a mutual benefit for Moyer, who says the simultaneous experience of being student and intern enriched her in both aspects. “Not only did my coursework make me a better intern, but my internship made me a better student.”

Setting her sights on working with students, Moyer says she is now motivated to continue her education and pursue a master’s degree in school counseling. “This experience has made me even more excited for my future career!”
