Business Management Major Completes Two Invaluable Internships

Real world experience doesn’t get more real than serving 1.4 million customers in 29 counties.

Kelsey Ottey ’14 found that out the summer before her senior year, conducting an internship at PPL Electric Utilities, a utilities provider in Allentown. As a marketing research co-operative associate, the business management major led a variety of initiatives, including the analysis of social media and web page transaction studies. Additionally, Ottey managed research vendors who oversaw customer loyalty studies, conducted a deep dive into JD Powers customer satisfaction data, and published a summer employee newsletter.

Through connections – and strong recommendations – at PPL Electric Utilities, Ottey transitioned to a second internship at PPL EnergyPlus the following fall semester. In her new marketing associate role, Ottey supported sales, improved customer satisfaction, analyzed business strategies, and provided summaries detailing retention of current and prospective customers.

“I was able to gain transferrable skills that are essential no matter where my future takes me.”

These experiences provided the perfect environment for Ottey, who focused on marketing at Moravian.

The Perkasie native enjoyed the opportunity to gain experience in the corporate world while not yet a college graduate. “Through my internships I was able to understand the real issues that affect industries today and have the opportunity to take part in real projects that were important to the overall success of the organization,” she says. “I was able to gain transferrable skills that are essential no matter where my future takes me.”

Ottey credits Moravian for providing the preparation for her to thrive outside the classroom. “I believe that my education at Moravian prepared me for the challenges I would face,” she says. “My education gave me the knowledge I needed not only to succeed, but also to excel in all aspects of my internships.”
