MU Spotlight: Scott Hughes

MU Spotlight 20/20

Scott Hughes

What is your role at the University and what is something many may not know about the work you do?

I’m the Chief Information Officer. I like to think that the IT department and I play a very small role in being part of the educational process. When we see a faculty member or staff member engaging with the tools we've all built together with the students, it’s magic. I wish more people could experience that.

My favorite spot on campus is…

Benigna's Garden (on South Campus) or Comenius MDF C4 because it's quiet and I don't get cell phone coverage.

What’s your favorite 鶹 tradition?

The Freshman Walk, Vespers, Faculty Lecture Series, Hot Dog Contest, and research.

One thing that many of my colleagues don’t know about me outside of my 鶹 responsibilities is …

I grow and train bonsai trees. I'm a total geek.

My typical weekend goes something like this:

Mountain Biking, Gardening, Family, Friends, Research.

Have you given or received a #MyMoPaw yet?

I want to give one to PTD and Fred Reinhard but that hasn't been vetted through PC yet. I received one from my team—it just made me feel really great.

What’s your favorite color? Why?

Sky blue. Infantry.

Finish this sentence: “When I grow up, I want to be _____.”

An Organic Farmer/Brewer, and Restaurant owner.

What’s your biggest pet peeve?

Coffee has got to be strong. I’m ridiculed relentlessly by my team.

Who is your hero? Why?

I have a bunch. My Dad and My Mom, My Grandparents, various Uncles and Aunts, Evil Knievel, Dali Lama, Budda, and a bunch others. All influenced me in some way.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Keep an open mind and explore life and people that don't share your point of view.

What makes you happy?

Watching the pieces start to come together.  Everyone collaborating and learning.
