BETHLEHEM, PA, March 27, 2019: Today, Moravian College announced that it will host G.K. Gandhi on Tuesday, April 2 at 7:00 p.m. in Foy Concert Hall on the Priscilla Payne Hurd campus of the college.  Gandhi鈥檚 presentation, Tagore and Gandhi: Light in the midst of Darkness, is part of the Rabindranath Tagore Distinguished Lecture Series and will explore the relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore, the Bengali poet, philosopher, novelist, and painter best known for being the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913.  This event is free and open to the public.

鈥淢oravian College is thrilled to be welcoming G.K. Gandhi to Bethlehem to continue this important lecture series,鈥 commented Bryon Grigsby, president of Moravian College.  鈥淲e鈥檙e fortunate to have the support of Arup SenGupta from Lehigh University who has been the driving force behind this event.鈥

Gopalkrishna Gandhi (G.K. Gandhi) is a retired Indian Administrative Service officer and diplomat, who was the 22nd Governor of West Bengal serving from 2004 to 2009. Mr. Gandhi currently teaches at Ashoka University, where he is a Professor of History and Politics.

As an academic, G.K. Gandhi has written a number of well-received works on Gandhi as well as Nehru. He has also written a number of plays and translated Vikram Seth鈥檚 novel A Suitable Boy into Hindi. Mr. Gandhi served as India鈥檚 ambassador to Norway and Iceland in 2002. Mr. Gandhi was also India鈥檚 High Commissioner to South Africa and Sri Lanka.

鈥淩abindranath Tagore unequivocally declared time and again 鈥榚very glory of mankind is mine regardless of its origin.鈥  Very much the same way, he often demonstrated throughout his life that suffering in any corner of the world is also no different,鈥 said Arup SenGupta, P.C. Rossin professor at Lehigh University. 鈥淭hus knowing and being familiar with Tagore鈥檚 writings and works will help us find commonality among fellow humans beyond race, religion and nationality, and erase the divide,鈥 SenGupta added.
