What are Orthotic Devices?
Custom orthotics are podiatric devices used to help patient鈥檚 who are dealing with discomfort associated with their feet. They are designed to support and comfort a person鈥檚 feet and are made precisely for the way their foot is shaped and how they walk. They are not one-size-fits-all. Orthotics are provided to patients with a prescription and are fabricated to match the contours of a patient鈥檚 feet exactly. After an assessment by the podiatrist, patients will be issued a device which can help correct a variety of foot and gait conditions.What Types of Orthotics Are Used?
Usually, there a two types of orthotics which are used by podiatrists which include:
- Functional- Abnormal motion is addressed with they type. Tendonitis and foot pain can also be treated. They are traditionally made from graphite or semi-rigid plastic.
- Accommodative- Designed to provide comfort and support, these are used to address diabetic foot ulcers, uncomfortable conditions which cause pressure, and calluses on the bottom of feet. They are usually much softer.
Orthotics can treat foot, ankle, and heel pain, bursitis, tendonitis, and plantar fasciitis. Over-the-counter inserts can be less expensive, however these orthotics are much more effective and they are made from the best materials available. They can last many years and will be created for the unique person. Most insurance providers will cover a portion of the costs.
When Should I Go to the Podiatrist?
When a patient has severe or continuous ankle or foot pain, it could be time to visit the podiatrist. The doctor will evaluate the concerns present and the person鈥檚 general health to determine if any contributing factors are present. The way the person walks and the structure of the feet will be examined by the doctor. Special technology may be used to view how the feet are functioning when the person runs or walks if necessary. To make the orthotic devices, the doctor will take 3D images of each foot and will also take measurements of the feet.听
