Build an Emergency Kit - Have an emergency kit containing basic necessities to take with you whenever you are traveling, to keep in your car, or in a classroom or building.
- Plenty of water for several people.
- Nonperishable food that is easy to consume and has a long shelf life.
- Can opener.
- A battery powered hand radio to listen to the NOAA weather alerts.
- Flashlight with spare batteries.
- A first aid kit to treat basic injuries and illnesses.
- Blanket in case of power or heat lost.
- Warm clothes.
- Whistle to alert emergency rescue services to your location.
- Personal sanitation supplies including garbage bags and plastic ties for extended situations.
- Small toolkit.
- Portable power pack to charge phones and other necessary electronics.
- Important personal documents including identifications.
Make a Plan - Always have a plan in place in the event of an emergency where it is going out for a night, going on a trip, or working alone somewhere.
- Always tell somebody where you are going and what time you believe to be back.
- Have a list of emergency contacts in case of an emergency.
- Going on a trip? Share your itinerary with friends and family including flight information and or hotel accommodations.
- Plan a check in whether its a phone call seeing how your day is going or to make sure there's no issues in the workplace.
Take a Basic First Aid and CPR Course - Having basic knowledge when it comes to helping somebody can make a difference or save a life. Enroll in a basic first aid and CPR course before going on a trip or starting the semester.
